Golders Green town centre where the Liberal Democrats want to end street drinking
Finchley & Golders Green Liberal Democrats are calling on Barnet Council to make Golders Green Town Centre an Alcohol Free Zone. Childs Hill Ward Councillor and Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, Jack Cohen has put down a motion at the Council Meeting on 13 July.
Councillor Cohen says he and his Ward Colleagues Cllrs Susette Palmer and Monroe Palmer constantly receive complaints from residents and shopkeepers about street alcohol drinkers. Cllr Cohen points out "unfortunately there has been a steady increase in the numbers of men under the influence of alcohol and who consume alcohol on the streets of the shopping centre. There is no doubt that this is having a negative impact on the vitality of the Town Centre"
Finchley & Golders Green Liberal Democrats successfully campaigned for an Alcohol Free Zone in Cricklewood. This is now up and running. Cllr Cohen wants the same laws to apply in Golders Green: "Residents and Shopkeepers in Cricklewood warmly welcomed the zone. The Conservatives originally opposed the Cricklewood Ban but then came to their senses. I hope the Conservatives will now support our proposals for Golders Green."
PS At the Council meeting on 13 July, the Conservatives rejected proposals for an alcohol free zone in Golders Green Town Centre. Childs Hill's Liberal Democrat Councillors will be continuing their campaign against this anti-social behaviour in Golders Green Town Centre.
