£80 million wasted by Barnet Council

January 22, 2014 12:00 PM

Lib Dems want the Council to be more open how taxpayers' money is spentBarnet's Conservative controlled Council has paid £80 million to just five companies this financial year. The shocking statistic was discovered by Liberal Democrat Councillor Jack Cohen in a reply to a question at yesterday's Council meeting.

Over £15 million has been spent on agency staff, over £54 million paid to Capita, and over £3.5 million to consultants and lawyers.

Cllr Cohen is shocked by some of the figures: "I cannot believe we are shelling out £15 million to a staff agency. This is ridiculous. It is a waste of council tax payers' money. Why can't we recruit our own staff? It is much more economic, and is more likely to provide local jobs for local people. As to the payment to Capita, I want to know why Barnet paid Capita £35 million up front, even before the controversial outsourcing contract with them started. The Conservative leadership of the Council have some explaining to do."
