Increasing fees for the cycle hire scheme is not a 'simplication of fees' - Caroline Pidgeon

December 17, 2014 5:25 PM

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on TfL's proposals announced today to increase cycle hire charges for many users of the scheme said:

"Under the cloak of 'simplification' the Mayor and TfL were hoping they could push through increases in the cycle hire scheme
for many users of the scheme, without anyone noticing.

"To attempt to push through such increases in such an underhand way, just two years after the doubling of fees is insulting in the extreme.

"These further increases in fees should have been included in TfL's recent annual fare announcement.

"The cycle hire scheme needs to expand across London, starting with its expansion into Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.

"At the same time a dramatic increase in users would take place if it was simply easier to hire a bike using Oyster and contactless payment.

"Making these changes should be the Mayor's first priorities, not underhand increases in charges."
