Mayor admits his manifesto pledge on cycle superhighways will not be met – Caroline Pidgeon

At Mayor's Question Time today the Mayor made the stark admission that his commitment made in 2012 to triple the number of cycle super-highways by 2015 will not now be met.

When the pledge was first made four cycle superhighways existed in London. The Mayor now admits that only eight will now be completed by the end of the year. The Mayor also demonstrated his lack of attention to detail when he revealed that he wasn't even aware that he had cancelled Cycle Superhighway 6 (linking Penge to the City).

Commenting on the Mayor's admission Caroline Pidgeon AM, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group said.

"There is a huge gap between the Mayor's rhetoric on cycling and his actual record of delivery.

"The admission that only half of the promised cycle superhighways will be delivered is further evidence that Transport for London are falling short in making London a city that is safe and attractive for everyone to cycle."

"We have long known that TfL fail to spend their allocated budget on cycling. Today we have a firm confirmation of what this failure has led to."

In addition to delays in completing some cycle superhighways ( CS4 from London Bridge to Woolwich, the CS9 from Hounslow to Hyde Park, the CS10 from Cricklewood to Marble Arch and CS11 from West Hampstead to Hyde Park) the Mayor has also cancelled two routes - the CS11 from Penge to the City and CS12 from East Finchley to Angel.
