By now hundreds of electric buses should have been put on London’s roads – Stephen Knight

June 29, 2015 6:22 PM

Stephen Knight AM, Liberal Democrat London Assembly environment spokesperson, commenting on today's announcement that London is set to trial the world's first purpose-built double decker electric bus said:

"It is encouraging that a fully electric double decker bus is at last to be trialled."

"Yet while celebrating this development let's not pretend for one moment that London is leading the way in delivering electric buses.

"For all the spinning by the Mayor and TfL about the New Routemaster being the 'cleanest greenest bus' the reality is that there are far cleaner buses now available. The first batch of Routemasters on London's streets are emitting five times more dangerous NO2 air pollution than the highest standard hybrid buses that now exist, not to mention electric buses which create zero exhaust pollution.

"Allowing the New Routemaster to be exempted from the pollution standards in the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is completely indefensible. This double standard is the price of his irrational obsession with the incredibly expensive New Routemaster bus, when his first priority should be to protect the health of Londoners."

"The Mayor of London should by now have put hundreds of zero exhaust emission electric buses on London's roads."
