Access to the EU Research Infrastructure and Horizon 2020 funding has been the bedrock of our research output. Over €80 billion of funding is open for the UK to access and the adversarial rhetoric about our relationship with the EU from the Conservatives puts this in jeopardy.
Many residents of Barnet, particularly those who worked at the National Institute of Medical Research in Mill Hill before the laboratories were relocated to Central London, rely on this funding for their livelihoods and for their ground-breaking research,
Alasdair Hill, the Liberal Democrat Candidate for Hendon, is a science teacher and former medical researcher working across the UK and West Africa on projects investigating drug targets and disease markers for malaria. He is supporting the March for Science in Central London today. He states,
"Having worked on EU-funded projects I have seen first-hand how vital EU funding has been for supporting goals of such humanitarian importance as the research into Neglected Tropical Diseases.
Today's [Saturday's] March for Science is vital to send a message to government about how an embattled science industry threatens our economy and place in the world. Over 17% of Higher Education research grants come from the EU. We have access to the brightest and best academics for easy collaboration and easy employment in the UK.
Brexit with limits on immigration will see a brain-drain from the UK; an exodus of innovation that will grind our engineering, aerospace and pharmaceutical industries to a halt."
"Only a Liberal Democrat government," Alasdair adds, "will block the Hard Brexit that threatens our global-leading position in research and development."
