Barnet EU 2019 resultThe Barnet Liberal Democrats are tonight celebrating their biggest result in Barnet, winning 28% of the vote.

Across London the Liberal Democrats topped the poll for the first time ever in a national election. Reflecting on their record-breaking haul of 3 seats Clareine Enderby, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Finchley and Golders Green said, "our message was clear. Brexit is wreaking havoc in the UK. It is impacting on our ability to run an effective NHS, trade with confidence around the world and solve the Climate Emergency. The people of Barnet have roundly rejected the humiliation brought on this country by the Conservatives and the duplicity of Corbyn. The only way forward to resolve this crisis is to hold a People's Vote and stop this Brexit chaos."

Chair of the local branch, Gerry Fitzgerald commented, "this fantastic result truly reflects the outward facing and tolerant nature of the people of Barnet who are fed up with the politics of division espoused by Farage and May. The Liberal Democrats have always stood on a platform of consensus, working together to build a Britain that works for everyone and create a fair, free and open society; a united country in a united Europe. London has this week voted for a brighter future."

The Liberal Democrats campaigned on a clear commitment to remain in the European Union with their popular "Bollocks to Brexit" message. Picking up 27% percent of the vote in London, a swing of 20% from 2014 the last time MEPs were elected, their manifesto pledge to hold a People's Vote on Brexit chimed well with the 62.2% of Barnet voters who supported Remain in the 2016 European Union referendum.

Speaking about their campaign success Donna Pickup, lead campaigner in Hendon, highlighted, "on every doorstep and at every tube station Barnet residents consistently voiced their anger and frustration at the Establishment parties' failure to tackle the Brexit crisis and ignore the growing call to stop this economic disaster by seeking a People's Vote."
