Why I'm standing in Finchley and Golders Green

Luciana Berger

I look forward to standing as the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Finchley and Golders Green. I will be leaving my constituents of Liverpool Wavertree with a heavy heart but as a family, trying to balance work with raising young children, we have made the decision to move full time to London at the next General Election.

I have a special bond with Finchley and Golders Green

Having the opportunity to represent the people of Finchley and Golders Green would be a huge privilege. I have a special bond with the area, where many friends and family live, and I spent a great deal of time here growing up. It is one of the most diverse and thriving areas of Barnet, but it also has challenges that urgently need addressing. These include tackling the housing crisis, the significant cuts to school funding and increasing levels of crime.

Brexit remains the fundamental issue affecting our future as a country and consumes the political landscape. The Conservative Party is determined to drive through a hard and cruel Brexit at any cost, including unlawfully shutting down Parliament, while the Labour Party has a Brexiteer leadership at its helm.

The Liberal Democrats want to stop Brexit and remain in Europe

This is not an acceptable choice for the residents of Finchley and Golders Green, almost 70% of whom voted to remain in Europe. It is no surprise the Liberal Democrats beat every other party to come top in Barnet in the EU elections in May. The Liberal Democrats are the only party to have a clear position at the next General Election - to stop Brexit and remain in the European Union.

I have been on a journey this year. I left a Labour Party that I no longer recognise and one that is now being investigated by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission for institutional antisemitism.

I am proud to have joined the Liberal Democrats, a party dedicated to securing Britain's future as a tolerant, open and inclusive society under the dynamic leadership of Jo Swinson.

I am very confident that with your help, the Liberal Democrats will win in Finchley and Golders Green. Please get in touch and get involved. I relish the opportunity to work together to secure the future our country deserves.
